Medicare

In Australia, working with a psychologist allows you to claim partial Medicare rebates. If you have a Mental Health Care Plan, the 2024 rebate is $137 per session for clinical psychologists or $96 per session for other psychologists. Once you reach the Medicare Safety Net threshold, you may be eligible for higher rebates.

To access Medicare rebates, you must have a referral with a Mental Health Care Plan from your General Practitioner (GP), psychiatrist, or pediatrician. When booking an appointment with your GP, it is essential to inform the receptionist that you need a referral to a psychologist. Your GP will need approximately 30 minutes to discuss your needs and complete the required documentation. Eligible individuals can access up to 10 individual sessions within a calendar year. Your referring doctor must review your progress after the first 6 sessions to approve the remaining 4 sessions.

**Note:** You must obtain your GP referral and Mental Health Care Plan *before* your first appointment to qualify for Medicare rebates. If the plan is dated after the appointment date, Medicare will not provide a rebate.

Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)

Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) in Australia typically includes rebates for services with psychologists. Please check with your OSHC provider for specific rebate amounts.

Private Health Insurance

All psychologists and some counselors are registered with private health insurance providers, such as Medibank Private, BUPA, AHM, HCF, NIB, and Australian Unity. Each provider offers different products, some of which include coverage for psychological services. Confirm your coverage details with your private health insurance company.
