Fees & Rebates

Fees

A 50-minute session with a psychologist ranges from $220 to $260 (surcharge applies for appointments outside regular business hours). Your out-of-pocket expenses may be reduced if you have Medicare, health insurance or other funding options.

A 50-minute session with a counsellor is typically $150 and some private health insurance ‘Extras’ cover may include counselling services.

Please visit therapist’s individual profile pages for more information about their fees and appointment lengths.

Medicare Rebates

In Australia, working with a psychologist allows you to claim partial Medicare rebates. If you have a Mental Health Care Plan, the 2025 rebate is $141 per session for clinical psychologists or $96 per session for other psychologists. Once you reach the Medicare Safety Net threshold, you may be eligible for higher rebates.

To access Medicare rebates, you must have a referral with a Mental Health Care Plan from your General Practitioner (GP), psychiatrist, or pediatrician. When booking an appointment with your GP, it is essential to inform the receptionist that you need a referral to a psychologist. Your GP will need approximately 30 minutes to discuss your needs and complete the required documentation. Eligible individuals can access up to 10 individual sessions within a calendar year. Your referring doctor must review your progress after the first 6 sessions to approve the remaining 4 sessions.

**Note:** You must obtain your GP referral and Mental Health Care Plan *before* your first appointment to qualify for Medicare rebates. If the plan is dated after the appointment date, Medicare will not provide a rebate.

To access the rebate, you will need to book a consultation appointment with your General Practitioner (GP) and obtain both a Referral Letter and a Mental Health Care Plan.

Private Health Insurances

Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) in Australia is a requirement for maintaining a student visa and typically includes rebates for services with psychologists and clinical psychologists. Please check with your OSHC provider for specific rebate amounts.

For Overseas Visitor Health Insurance, a requirement for some temporary resident visas, whether you can claim rebate and how much you can claim depends on your levels of cover. Please confirm your coverage details with your provider.

All clinical psychologists, psychologists and some counsellors are registered with private health insurance providers, such as Medibank Private, BUPA, AHM, HCF, NIB, and Australian Unity. Psychologist and counselling services are under ‘Extras’ cover. Each provider offers different ‘Extras’ products. It is best to check your insurance product information document, or contact your private health insurance providers for clarification.
